About BOSS paints

BOSS paints is a Belgian company that produces high-quality paints for both professionals and private individuals. The company not only has the production, but also the distribution completely in its own hands: in addition to four wholesale depots for the professional painter, BOSS paints operates a network of shops where paint with advice under the brand name Colora is sold to do-it-yourselfers.

Intended results

Inès Vanwijnsberghe, Production Manager in Waregem: "We mix the water-based wall paints in large mixing tubs in which we prepare batches of 4,500 litres. Each batch contains an average of 10 to 15 different components, from liquid solvents and binders to pigments and fillers in powder form. Just like in baking, the relative proportions of the components play an important role in the final result: the components must therefore be carefully weighed. Mixing by weight is a manual process."

Investment in hardware and software

To achieve the intended results, BOSS paints has invested in an accurate RAVAS weighing system in the forks of the stacker truck.

Mixing 4500 litres of paint

How does it work?

On a mezzanine at the top of the mixing vats, the components are supplied on a stacker: the liquid materials in IBC containers or drums, the solid materials in bags on pallets. Via an opening at the top of the mixing tank, an employee dispenses the components, directly from the stacker, by cutting open the bags and dumping them empty, or by simply opening the tap at the bottom of the IBC. The RAVAS weighing system in the forks of the stacker shows the operator on a display how many kilos he has already dispensed into the vat.

Producing with care for people

Major advantages

"The efficiency gains we have made are actually an extra," says Inès Vanwijnsberghe. "At BOSS, customer intimacy is more important than operational excellence. We want above all to produce responsibly, with concern for people. That does not mean, however, that we do not have any production targets," she adds, laughing. "In the past, all components were weighed on a fixed scale, some 10 metres away from the mixing vat. For some liquid components, this meant that 500 litres of liquid had to be taken from the scales to the mixing tank and manually tipped into the tank. This was heavy work and sometimes led to dangerous situations. By weighing on the stacker, next to the mixing tub, we have gained in terms of ergonomics and safety."

Inès Vanwijnsberghe, Production Manager

”We strive to produce responsibly, with proper care for our people. With RAVAS we now bring the scale to the mixing vessel, helping our operators to mix safely and ergonomically.”

About the application

Dosing and mixing

When producing batches of semi finished or finished product, the aim is to correctly mix the different ingredients and components. Amounts and proportions determine the quality of the product. A mobile scale helps you to produce cheaper, safer and more efficient. It also generates the information you need for quality control and tracking and tracing procedures. The scale is brought to the components: on a hand pallet truck scale the mixing vessel is driven from one ingredient to the next and components are dosed straight from their container. The risk of damages and product loss is greatly reduced.
