The challenge
Incoming and outgoing goods weighing
Menzies Aviation, a major player in air cargo, handles transport to and from aircraft at Schiphol Airport. The company handles as much as 430,000 tons of cargo annually, ensuring that goods reach their destinations safely and efficiently. To accurately manage the weights of incoming and outgoing shipments, Menzies opted for an innovative solution: eight forklifts equipped with RAVAS' robust weighing systems. This implementation allowed Menzies to significantly optimize its logistics process.
Menzies handles a wide range of goods, ranging from bottles of wine and Norwegian salmon to machine parts and flowers. These diverse loads are transported in a variety of packaging, including cardboard boxes and wooden crates of various shapes and sizes. Previously, each pallet was weighed individually on a fixed scale. This led to delays and waiting times, which compromised the efficiency of the logistics process. In addition, it was important that weights were recorded accurately to prevent airlines from being billed incorrectly.
Ramon Maas, Manager of Cargo Handling at Menzies Aviation
“We chose forklifts with weighing fork boards from RAVAS. These systems were specially chosen for their robustness and reliability, as the trucks are in use 24/7 and are sometimes heavily loaded.”
The solution
More convenience and time savings
Weighing of pallets now takes place while picking up and moving goods in the warehouse. As soon as a driver picks up a pallet, he enters the shipment number on a screen in the forklift cab. Immediately the details of the shipment, including the registered weight of the bill of lading, appear on the screen. The driver can see at a glance whether the actual weight matches the weight on the bill of lading. All weighing data is automatically transmitted to a central database, where carriers can view it and use it for billing purposes. This system enables Menzies to provide accurate and timely weights to their customers, and quickly identify any discrepancies.
By switching from fixed scales to weighing carriage plate scales, Menzies has saved significant time. Waiting times at the scales are a thing of the past. The ability to weigh freight directly during transport within the warehouse has streamlined the process. This not only contributes to increased productivity, but also allows Menzies to work more reliably and transparently towards their customers.
Time savings
Mobile weighing systems allow pallets to be weighed immediately during transport, making waiting times at fixed scales a thing of the past.
Improved efficiency
The integrated weighing system speeds up the logistics process, allowing Menzies to process more goods in less time and without interruptions.
Accuracy
Real-time weighing and recording of weights ensures a high degree of accuracy and reduces errors in billing and shipments.
Cost savings
By becoming more efficient in transportation and reducing errors, Menzies significantly reduces operational costs.
Increased customer satisfaction
More accurate weight recording and faster processing allows Menzies to serve its customers better and faster, increasing customer satisfaction.
Safer work environment
By using robust and reliable weighing systems, the risk of overloading is reduced, contributing to safer working conditions.
Ramon Maas, Manager of Cargo Handling at Menzies Aviation
"The positive noises in the warehouse are important to me. When I hear the guys say, 'This is ideal, because it all goes much faster,' I know that the project is a success and widely supported by the organization.”
Conclusion
Accurate and reliable
Menzies Aviation is now better equipped to meet the high demands of the air cargo industry, in which speed, accuracy and reliability are crucial. The implementation of RAVAS' mobile weighing systems demonstrates how technology can have a significant impact on the efficiency and accuracy of logistics operations. By using robust and reliable systems, Menzies can better serve its customers while improving internal processes.
